How to Use This Calculator

Enter the total number of acres you farm. Then fill in each cost category: seed, fertilizer, chemicals, fuel and machinery, labor, land cost, and any other expenses. The calculator totals everything and divides by acres to show your per-acre production cost.

Why This Matters

Knowing your cost per acre is the foundation of every farm financial decision. It determines your break-even price, helps you compare profitability across fields, and reveals which input categories are consuming the most money.

Methodology

Total costs = Seed + Fertilizer + Chemicals + Fuel + Labor + Land + Other. Cost per acre = Total costs / Total acres. Tracking each category separately helps identify where cost reductions will have the biggest impact on profitability.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving out overhead costs like insurance, accounting fees, and farm shop expenses.
  • Not including the cost of unpaid family labor at market rates.
  • Using last year's input prices instead of current-season costs.
  • Averaging costs across all fields instead of tracking per-field profitability.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Typical corn production costs are $400-700 per acre.
  • Land cost is usually the largest single expense.
  • Track costs by field to identify your most and least profitable areas.
