How to Use This Calculator
Enter the number of bushels you want to convert and select the grain type from the dropdown. Each grain has a standard test weight (pounds per bushel) set by the USDA. The calculator converts bushels to short tons, metric tons, and total pounds.
Why This Matters
Grain is traded in bushels domestically but in metric tons internationally. Accurate conversion is essential for export contracts, trucking logistics (weight limits), and storage planning. Using the wrong test weight can cause significant errors in large quantities.
Methodology
Pounds = Bushels × Test weight (lbs/bu). Short tons = Pounds / 2,000. Metric tons = Pounds / 2,204.6. Standard test weights: corn 56, wheat 60, soybeans 60, oats 32, barley 48, sorghum 56, rice 45 lbs/bu.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the wrong test weight — soybeans are 60 lbs/bu, not 56 like corn.
- Confusing short tons (2,000 lbs) with metric tons (2,204.6 lbs) on export contracts.
- Not adjusting for actual test weight — high-test-weight grain yields more tons per bushel.
- Forgetting that moisture content affects weight — wet grain weighs more but is docked at the elevator.
Tips & Best Practices
- Standard test weights: corn 56, wheat 60, soybeans 60, oats 32, barley 48 lbs/bu.
- Actual test weight may vary — heavier grain yields more weight per bushel.
