Why This Matters

Soil pH controls nutrient availability — most crops perform best between pH 6.0 and 7.0. Without proper pH correction, even perfect fertilizer rates fail because nutrients like phosphorus and molybdenum become locked up in acidic soils, reducing uptake and wasting your fertilizer investment.

Methodology

Lime requirement is calculated using the buffer pH method: the difference between target and current pH is multiplied by a lime factor derived from buffer pH. Lower buffer pH values indicate higher buffering capacity (more clay or organic matter), requiring more lime to shift pH. Results assume 100% Effective Neutralizing Material (ENM).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring the buffer pH and basing lime rates only on the water pH — this underestimates lime needs on clay soils.
  • Applying more than 4 tons per acre in one pass, which can over-correct surface pH before it incorporates.
  • Using pelletized lime without adjusting for its lower ENM compared to finely ground ag lime.
  • Not allowing 6-12 months for lime to fully react before planting pH-sensitive crops.
