How to Use This Calculator
Use this mulch estimator to find out how much mulch you need. Measure the total area in square feet (length times width). Choose your desired mulch depth — typically 2-3 inches for garden beds and 3-4 inches for new plantings. The mulch coverage calculator shows cubic yards for bulk delivery and number of bags for retail purchase.
Why This Matters
Buying too little mulch means a second trip and inconsistent mulch coverage. Buying too much wastes money and leaves unused material. Accurate calculation saves time and ensures proper weed suppression and moisture retention across your entire garden or landscape.
Methodology
Volume = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) / 12 = cubic feet. Cubic yards = cubic feet / 27. Bags = cubic feet / bag size (typically 2 cu ft). One cubic yard covers approximately 162 sq ft at 2 inches deep.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring area by eyeball instead of actual measurements — errors compound over large areas.
- Not adding 10-15% extra for settling, curves, and edges.
- Applying mulch too deep (over 4 inches) which can suffocate plant roots.
- Piling mulch against tree trunks and plant stems — keep 2-3 inches away to prevent rot.
Tips & Best Practices
- Apply 2-4 inches of mulch for weed suppression.
- Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks.
- Bulk mulch is cheaper than bagged for areas over 50 sq ft.
