How to Use This Calculator
Enter the number of hives in your operation, the current sugar price per pound, and the estimated fall feed amount per hive. The calculator shows total sugar needed, feeding cost, and projected annual honey production.
Why This Matters
Adequate fall feeding ensures colonies have enough stores to survive winter. Underfed colonies starve or emerge weak in spring, reducing honey production and pollination capacity the following season.
Methodology
Total sugar = Hives × Pounds per hive. Cost = Total sugar × Price per pound. Honey estimate uses 45 lbs per hive per year as a conservative average for managed colonies in most US regions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Feeding too late in fall when bees cannot process syrup before cold weather arrives.
- Using thin syrup (1:1) for fall feeding instead of thick syrup (2:1) which bees store faster.
- Not checking stored honey frames before deciding how much supplemental feed is needed.
- Ignoring regional differences — northern hives need significantly more winter stores than southern hives.
Tips & Best Practices
- A healthy hive needs 60-90 lbs of honey to overwinter.
- Feed 2:1 sugar syrup in fall if stores are low.
- Inspect hives every 7-10 days during active season.
