NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium)

NPK refers to the three primary macronutrients essential for plant growth, represented by their chemical symbols on fertilizer labels.

NPK stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) — the three macronutrients that plants need in the largest quantities. Fertilizer labels display these as a three-number ratio (e.g., 10-10-10), indicating the percentage by weight of each nutrient in the product. Nitrogen promotes leafy vegetative growth, phosphorus supports root development and flowering, and potassium strengthens overall plant health and disease resistance. Soil testing is essential to determine the correct NPK ratio for a given crop and field. Over-application of any single nutrient can cause environmental harm and reduce crop quality.
